So.. Are you ready for it? THE #1 Zero-Waste Tip?! Okay y’all, here it is:
Use what you have.
It is that simple. Use what you have! When I learned of all these amazing products and sites on zero-waste, I was so excited to buy them. But I soon realized, I did not need moreee. I needed to use what I have.
I will give you a few examples of where I find this tip most applicable:
- Clothing. I am all for brands with ethical practices and I LOVE (yes, love love love) thrifting but I realized I wasn’t even using the clothes in my closet to their full extent! When I went through my closet, I even found items with the tag still on (whoopsies).
- Cleaning and Bathroom products. I have seen so many great sustainable alternatives to your typical, plastic bottle cleaning and shower products and I am tempted to buy them (duh!). But, I am holding off until I NEED them. It does no one any good to have half full plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles in my shower..
- Food. Oh yeah, let me tell you a lil something about food waste, it is real! America alone wastes 133 billion pounds of food a year. Although there is not a zero-waste product that fixes this, there are many ways you can get creative to waste less.
Using what you have is the most cost efficient and accessible way to be zero waste. Whether it means squeezing out the last bits of tooth paste from the tube or stitching up a hole in your sweater to give it a few more years of life. Every little bit makes a difference and I know you can use what you have!
