I drastically cut meat and animal products out of my diet over the past four years. I am a proud Pescatarian, making conscious decision along the way. At this point, I rarely eat fish and my diet is primarily plant based. My body does not do too well with dairy, but I do enjoy the occasional brie cheese and ice cream cone ;). My ideology on this topic, is that you don’t need to be perfect and go vegan. Do what feels best for you! I do what I do for my body and for the environment, find your reason and you’ll be surprised what you can do too.
Growing up, my mom made us the best homemade cooking, to the point where I would say her home cooking was my favorite food in the world, better than any restaurant. Once I went to college, I sorely missed those home cooked meals. My diet for the first two years of college consisted of campus dining and dino-nuggets. This all slowly changed once I was in my third year, I lived with a gal that would go on to become one of my best friends. She introduced me to plant based eating, along with another good friend of mine who had been vegan for a few years. Over the next two years, I veered farther away from my beloved dino-nuggets and closer to veggies and home cooked meals (just like mama used to make!).
It’s one thing to cut out animal products, it’s another to continue to do so. The reasons I have stuck with it are:
- For the animals! I love animals! I could no longer imagine eating them. In America, animals are mass bred and produced in terrible living conditions and then slaughtered. I don’t want to be a part of that cycle.
- For the environment. The raising of animal for food creates more green house gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined. Along with the creation of excessive CO2 production and the water required to keep those animals alive.
- For myself. The benefits of a plant based diet include reduced risk of heart disease and even some forms of cancer! If that weren’t enough, I simply feel pretty dang good doing what I do.
Overall, if this motivates you to cut out even one day of meat a week, just know that you are making a positive impact on your body and the world.
